Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator
These instructions are for setting Authenticator up for the first time or after a reset. If you are changing devices and need to move your Authenticator to the new device, see this article instead.
The following instructions are for using a computer and your phone in tandem, as completing the process is significantly more complicated when done entirely on the phone. If you do not have a computer available, please let me know.
On a computer: Go to https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo and sign in with your Brescia University e-mail address. If you are not immediately prompted to register your authentication information, click "Add sign-in method" and go through the wizard for Microsoft Authenticator until you are presented with a QR code.
On your phone: Open Microsoft Authenticator and...
- If your Brescia account is listed, tap on it and you will likely have an option that says something along the lines of "set up two factor authentication" - Tapping this will let you scan the QR code. -- If it does not show this option and is instead showing you (among other things) a 6-digit number that changes every 30 seconds, click the cog icon at the top right and then remove your Brescia account from the authenticator app.
- If your Brescia account does not show up and you are immediately prompted to set up an account, click "Scan QR code" if it's an option, or click "Work or School Account" and then you should see "Scan QR code" as an option.
- If your Brescia account does not show up and you're just taken to an empty list, click the + button and then Scan QR code if that's an option, or Work or School account first and then the Scan QR Code option after that.
On your computer: after you've scanned the QR code with the phone in the previous step, click next and a notification will be sent to the phone and a number will be displayed on the computer screen.
On your phone: Open the notification from Authenticator if you don't still have the app open. Enter the number shown on the computer screen and approve the prompt.
On your computer: The "Next" or "Finish" button should light up after you've approved the notification. Click it and you will have successfully set your authentication methods back up.
